Title: Firefox running slow
Post by: Gena01 on June 11, 2009, 10:42:00 am
I noticed recently that my Firefox 3.0 was running quite slow on my home PC. I know that there's a ton of news about browsers fighting to be the fastest but I felt that my home Firefox was running slower than my work copy. After doing a quick scan over addons that I have setup at home I noticed that my list is a bit longer compared to the setup I have at work. I went and disabled a number of addons that I am not using on a regular basis and restarted Firefox. Wow, what a difference. It seems like Firefox is like 10x snappier than it used to be. I don't know exactly which addon caused the slow down and don't want to create speculation. If your Firefox feels a bit sluggish then it's definitely worthwhile to go through your addons and disable or uninstall the ones you are not using.

Note: Firefox also has a Safe Mode (http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode) option that can also help if your Firefox is misbehaving or freaking out. It might also be something to look into to see just how fast things load and run without any extensions running.

Yeah, while all the add-ons are great features they do tend to bog down firefox. RoboForm is one prime candidate, at least for me it seems to severely slow things down, but on the other hand this automated fill out forms tool saves a lot of time (to me its invaluable). Also, the more bookmarks you have the slower firefox and probably any browser gets as well. So its a good thing to clean things up every once in a while.

Actually there's a great extension for Firefox to optimize bookmarks database. It's called Vacuum Places 0.2 (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/13824)

SpeedyFox (http://www.crystalidea.com/speedyfox) is a free utility to optimize (vacuum = defrag and compact) every SQLite database used by Firefox. It can also be applied on a custom user folder in case you have several versions of Firefox on your computer (e.g. regular + portable).

When firefox has been installed with too much add-ons or plug-ins then it will definitely become slow. Even if the internet connection is fast it will become slow because of too much application running together try to uninstall the firefox and reinstall it or maybe update it to newer version.

too many plugins and add-ons always hinders in the performance. for my firefox to behave properly, i continuously keep track of what all plugins and or add-ons am using or not.. if i am using something, i update it to the latest version and if i am not using something for a long time, i simply remove it,..
