I got exciting news to share. Apparently a group of developers formed a Firebug Working Group (http://www.getfirebug.com/blog/2008/02/26/firebug-working-group/) and managed to contact Joe Hewitt (the original author of Firebug). And now their Beta builds are being posted on getfirebug.com. The group has setup a project on Google Code website: http://code.google.com/p/fbug/ and this is the place to go for discussions and for submitting bug reports.
Personal Note: Firebug is an awesome extension. We as web developers need great tools to get our work done. The better the tools, the better the results. it was a shame to see firebug hang in there without any updates or maintainers. I am glad to see a whole group of developers stepping in and continuing to make fixes, changes and adding new functionality. I am sure there's a lot of exciting news and releases to follow.
