Gena01 Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: on August 05, 2003, 12:36:22 pm Hi
I know that this application has been designed to be a replacement for the Notepad, but still I dislike that F5 has not been assigned to "Reload file...". Somehow I think that this will not be changed 8-) To me it is just a normal way to refresh contents, just like in Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer, but now I end up with bunch of date stamps. Which by the way do NOT honour the regional settings of Windows. Also some of the menuitems might need a little tuning. The ellipses are heavily used on items that do not require additional input from the user (New, About, Preferences,Properties, File Format, ...) and they are missing from some where they should be used (Open, Find, ...) Also some items are in quite unfamiliar places (Properties, Insert, Search, ...) If you like to know more about those I suggest you browse thru "The Microsoft Windows User Experience : Official Guidelines for User Interface Developers and Designers" which is available as a book or from MSDN. It is a bit old, but there are a lot of good examples how and why things should be done or what to avoid. Please don't take this as a rant, your application is already very nice and useful. Thank you for releasing it as a freeware application. Keep up the good work, Mig Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: therube on August 05, 2003, 02:34:17 pm MRU not working properly.
Not storing paths, so when attempting to open file, reports "Can't open file". Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: therube on August 05, 2003, 02:44:26 pm Mikael, in reference to F5 ...
In notepad F5 does not refresh, it prints the date/time. Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: Gena01 on August 05, 2003, 02:46:26 pm
is this specific to 1.3.3? is it the same in 1.3.2? Gena01 Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: therube on August 05, 2003, 10:59:50 pm 1.3.2 worked properly.
1.3.3 only stores the 'basename'. (Well actually basename.ext). Also, on a network file \\compture2\filename.txt, the full path is stored. BTW, I do appreciate the expanded MRU list (even if it isn't currently working correctly). Hmmm. This was on Win98 where I noticed the MRU problem. It does not seem to be a problem on Win2K. Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: on August 06, 2003, 02:02:12 am Just discovered your program. I love it! Especially the support for UNIX and Mac files. Thanks!
Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: therube on August 06, 2003, 10:22:21 am Forget what I said about MRU.
It IS working properly. I tried it on another computer running Win98 & could not duplicate the problem. Turns out that the particular files that did not have the full pathname included, I had opened through a Norton Commander style program (Servant Salamander). In that program I had set win32pad as my default editor. Turns out that it was only passing the filename as a paramater to win32pad. I changed it to pass the "fullname" & now all is well. BTW, Servant Salamander, as is win32pad, is an EXCELLENT program (shareware). For anyone who wants to check it out. (Hope you don't mind the plug). http://www.altap.cz/salam_en/index.html Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: therube on August 06, 2003, 01:20:29 pm Question on dialog box ...
"Can't open file for writing! The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process" Now I know what is causing it. Just wondering if that is something new, or is it that I've just never run across it before. Cause if it's new, for me at least, it's not really a desirable feature. Reason: Many times I may have a file open, generally in a Dos program like List.com or Browse.com, or various file comparison utilities. Those utilities are generally always "read-only". At the same time, I am likely to have the same file opened in win32pad, making changes over time & then re-running the comparison. Ok, looks like I just haven't run into it before. If I use VIM (editor) or Visual Compare, it works as I wish. If I use List, Browse, or Delta (another visual comparison tool), I get the message. Now that I understand it more clearly, I can live with it. Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: on August 07, 2003, 08:46:55 pm "Ver 1.3.3 crashed on Windows 2000?"
Hi! This is a good and small editor. However, as I upgrade it from 1.0.2 (really old)to 1.3.3(the newest), it crashes while typing a letter in Chinese(happened twice). Is this a known problem? The OS is Windows 2000 SP4 for Traditional Chinese. Riched20.dll has been upgraded to Ver3.0. Thank you very much. best regards, Boris Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: on August 12, 2003, 03:19:04 am Hi!
This is nice lightweight editor. The bug: if replace some selection by tab... System: WinNT 4.0 SP6a. Best regards Igor Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: Gena01 on August 12, 2003, 07:53:31 am
Please explain. One of the features of Win32PAD is to use TAB to indent blocks of code. Gena01 Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: Gena01 on August 13, 2003, 10:23:15 am
Thanks for the info, I did take a look and will cleanup the menus a bit. Gena01 Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: on August 13, 2003, 10:34:24 am About above-mentioned TAB.
It's naturally to indent the multiline block by TAB. But if this feature work when selected the part of one line, especially middle one? And as result, the selection is enlarged to all line with indention. This behaviour looks highly strange for me. Maybe I am wrong? In the rest, I shall repeat, I like this Pad. For example, such at first sight an insignificant thing, as length of the selected block... Best regards Igor Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: mrtech on August 14, 2003, 08:07:05 am Off the current thread, you should add an option to allow single click of url's in files.
Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: Gena01 on August 14, 2003, 10:26:20 am
This was there before, but it was a problem and I changed it to double-click. With single-click you weren't able to select a part of the URL as text. Gena01 Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: laserlight on August 15, 2003, 11:02:22 pm
hmm... never noticed :o yeah, I agree that making that replace the selected portion by a tab might actually be more intuitive. Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: on August 20, 2003, 10:17:31 am Hello,
I use win32pad, and find it the best replacement for notepad. Most others are much bigger, and take much longer to load. However, there a few things in it that could be improved. Is it possible to select a home directory in a option somwhere instead of always opening the windows directory? Also, to make the show all filter default, so I can see text files with a different extention. Thanks. Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: on August 24, 2003, 01:11:58 pm Hi, just wanted to say how much I luv the prog, I've used it for all of my web programming since I got it, up until my brief stint using a Linux computer, where I used gedit. I'm back on Windows now, and back to loving win32pad, but I really miss having multiple files open with the tabs in gedit, so I thought I'd suggest it as a possible future feature, it'd be a real icing on the cake for me, at least. Thanks alot, keep up the good work! ^_^
Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: on August 24, 2003, 06:47:58 pm Hi,
I really like te program and I use it instead of Windows' Notepad at home and at work. I have a suggestion, though: to make the colors more configurable. Besides being able to set the colors for background and font, it would be nice to be able to set the colors for: - line number background - line number font - hyperlinks (blue hyperlinks are hard to see when using a dark background) Thanks and best regards, ciobi Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: Gena01 on August 24, 2003, 10:04:04 pm
This is fixed in my development version. (future 1.4.0) Lots of cool stuff coming. Gena01 Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: Gena01 on August 24, 2003, 10:04:49 pm
Hmm. I was thinking about home directory thingy and filters window. Will see what I can do about those for the future version(s). Gena01 Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: Gena01 on August 24, 2003, 10:06:22 pm
Hmm.. colors... I should be able to add the configuration for line number colors, need to look if richedit allows color configuration for hyperlinks. This needs a bit of research. And at this point I am going to fix/add the obvious stuff first. But then again you never know.. )) So keep the posts coming! Gena01 Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: Gena01 on August 24, 2003, 10:07:43 pm
I could make it configurable, but I won't set it to single-click as default. Anybody else wants this in? Gena01 Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: Gena01 on August 24, 2003, 10:10:31 pm
Hmm.. first of all I don't know much about Chinese, but I am curious to know more if you can e-mail me more info. Is the character set Unicode? Always? Anything else you can tell me about it? P.S. I don't speak Chinese, so please write in English. (I do get e-mails in Chinese sometimes.. I just can't read them.. sorry) Gena01 Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: Gena01 on August 24, 2003, 10:11:34 pm
This is fixed in my development version. (upcoming 1.4.0) Gena01 Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: Gena01 on August 24, 2003, 10:12:35 pm
Explain. If I "disable" smooth scrolling, what do you want it to do? Gena01 Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: on August 25, 2003, 08:24:31 am Hi,
I've downloaded the Win32Pad application (great app!), but my txt files won't open in it, fore some reason the files won't associate with it, how do I fix this? Thanks, Navin Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: mrtech on August 25, 2003, 01:57:35 pm
Making it configurable and off by default would be perfect, thanks. Also hate to throw out this nitpicks, but here goes: - can you limit the length of the filename in the MRU, I have a really, really long path/filename combo and it's across my screen on a 1024x768 setting. - add a link to your homepage right on the Help menu - not that I ever use it but the contents & help links don't open up automatically unless I'm in the win32pad directory. You might have to hardcore <apppath> & file into the menu option. - opening a maximized window after minimizing to tray opens it up in restored view, not maximized - adding associate to more files types as a subsection in the installer: .log, .csv, .html, .css, etc. Maybe in filetype groups, Text, Web, etc. Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: Gena01 on August 25, 2003, 09:33:19 pm
Did you download the Setup or the ZIP file? The setup should setup all the associations, also you could run the same setup again and just install it on top of the existing installation. Gena01 Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: Gena01 on August 25, 2003, 09:37:30 pm [clipped]

Also I'll check, but I know that there was a small option in the setup that allowed you to open ANY fiile from Windows Explorer's right click menu in Win32Pad. Gena01 Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: on August 27, 2003, 02:04:29 am Hi. Your program is very good. I am using it to replace the PFE.
I only want to suggest, maybe you want to consider adding capability at the 'find' function (ctrl-f) and 'replace' function (ctrl-h) to find and replace non printable characters such as tab and especially new line (CR/LF)? Sometime I need to split one long line to multiple lines or combine multiple lines to single line. Thank you for releasing this software as freeware. Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: therube on August 27, 2003, 08:13:38 am Option to make the "find" sticky, or a drop down box with the last number of finds listed.
Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: mrtech on August 27, 2003, 09:48:27 am I appreciate the quick turnarond in responding, here's another tiny nitpik:
- the key that you update for txtfile in the registry (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\txtfile\shell\open\command) should use the longfilename parameter of "%L" instead of the default "%1" which defaults to the short 8.3 filename - an entry in the Options menu to clear MRU Even less important: - appending version number to the "- win32pad" title extension of the window - ability to press esc to close the About screen. Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: Gena01 on August 27, 2003, 08:42:09 pm
I can see that %L seems to work on Windows 2000, I am just unsure if it will work on Windows 95 box. Is there any more info on using "%L" ? Gena01 Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: mrtech on August 28, 2003, 08:52:20 am I can't seem to find any documentation but I'm sure if the OS supports LongFileNames that this should work, I'll keep digging.
Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: on August 28, 2003, 02:31:52 pm I downloaded the setup, and installed Win32Get a couple of times, but it just won't associate with my text files.
Maybe it got something to do with another text editor I installed before Win32get? I downloaded Copywriter first but I didn't like it, but that app did associate with my text files. But I still use Win32Get, even though I can't open the files directly. Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: mrtech on August 28, 2003, 04:41:51 pm Navin, not sure if you mean Win32Get or Win32Pad, try downloading Win32Pad instead.
Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: on August 29, 2003, 11:03:18 am My mistake, I meant Win32Pad.
Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: mrtech on August 29, 2003, 01:50:37 pm So did you download/install win32pad and it still didn't associate .txt?
Try see if another notepad program is running, like in the systray or something. Or if the other program changes the association from it's setting on load up. win32pad does this with the installer, not each time it runs. Oh yeah Gena01, that's a feature you can add to the Preferences for all the file types, etc instead of the installer. Also, I loaded up a Unix formatted file and changed the setting to DOS/WIN from the file menu, without actually changing anything, but the file modified status needs to be triggered in order to enable saving the file in that format. Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: Gena01 on August 29, 2003, 03:03:40 pm
Hmm.. I need to check the installer script, I guess that it could be some situation that the installer might not handle properly. Navin, please run "regedit" and open "My Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt" and check the "Default" value on the right side, it should say "txtfile" in the data column for the "(Default)" name. Gena01 Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: on September 01, 2003, 04:03:03 pm I Checked it in Regedit, what I see is "txt_auto_file"
and I recognize the icon, it's from some other program I think. What is the next step? Title: Win32Pad 1.3.3 Feedback Post by: Gena01 on September 01, 2003, 04:16:31 pm
I released 1.4.0 version of Win32Pad today, try the new setup file it should fix the problem. Gena01 |
